cannot say this enough.
having an addiction does not make you a worthless human. I’ve never understood that idea.
addiction isn’t even a decision. you don’t choose to live your life controlled by something that potentially can and will kill you. you don’t choose to rely on a dealer who will charge excessive amounts for something that you feel you can’t live without.
people seem to think that drug addicts make the decision to become what they are. they don’t. they fall into it. something stupid makes them decide to do a drug once, whether it’s being in a bad situation that they don’t know how to deal with, or pressure from loved ones and peers. perhaps they didn’t even choose to. perhaps someone else did it to them (it happens, trust me).
so stop judging drug addicts and making out that they chose to do it, just like they choose whether to have cereal or toast for breakfast. addiction is an illness, not a choice.
